The Castle Family Renovacy
“Natalya! Darling, I’ve got the most wonderful news!” Barney seized Natalya’s hands and whirled her round and round.
“What? Tell me now!” Natalya demanded, as she came to a halt, giddy and laughing.
“I’ve found us a bigger house!”
Natalya threw herself into his arms.
“That’s so clever of you! How have you done that?”
He hugged her close, her body soft against his.
“Petra and Alexis – they’re going to Europe for the next five years. They said they were going to sell up, and I asked them how much they were hoping to get for it, and then said we couldn’t afford that much, but we could afford this much – and they said fine. And they’d throw in the basic furniture as well.”
Natalya slid to the ground, and kissed him.
“How big is it? Bigger than this, I hope.”
“Three big bedrooms and a tiny little one. Two bathrooms. A big kitchen, a dining hall and a big sitting room. And a utility room as well. They say it’s a bit dingy on the outside, but they’ve brightened up the inside nicely.”
“You mean this won’t be our total living space any more?” Natalya said, as they went inside and she looked round the tiny room that was their kitchen, dining room, sitting room – you name it.
“No. And the girls can have a bedroom each, instead of having to share this cupboard.” Barney opened the door onto Sofia and Elena’s tiny bedroom.
“I’ll sign everything tomorrow, transfer the money, and we can move in on Saturday. It’s a bit of a way out of town, but I think we can cope with that for the extra space, can’t we? Would you like to hug and kiss me again? That was rather nice…”
It was almost dark when they arrived and the house looked a bit gloomy and forbidding. But Petra had said that the inside was much brighter.
Sofia ran in first. She wasn’t quite sure what she was seeing.
Then she turned on the light.
Elena was right behind her. Both girls stared in disbelief at the kitchen.
Natalya stood in the bedroom and felt faintly queasy as she looked at Alexis’s idea of cheerful bedroom wallpaper. No wonder they never invited anyone round! She’d believed then when they said it was too far away for parties.
And even Barney, who was normally Mr Optimist, was hard put to reassure Sofia that the house could be made to look really nice and be really comfortable.
That night, lying on the bed and trying not to look at the wallpaper, Natalya turned to Barney.
“Oh Barney, what have we let ourselves in for?”
“It’ll be all right. I think so anyway. The building’s sound – I did get the survey done.”
He pulled his wife close and kissed her.
“As long as we’re together, we can manage. I think so, anyway.”
