The dog has a collar - the joy child and the daybreak child saved up their pocket money and bought it for him. They all love the dog, even the wanted child, and the dog loves them. Only hope isn’t so sure, and it is because she is worried about what the dog costs. They still don’t have a lot of money, and the children are growing. Everyone needs new clothes. And not just the children, but hope and strength too. Their clothes are beginning to look worn and faded. They have some money, I know, but they are wondering what to spend it on first. And so hope worries about adopting the dog completely. The dog brings things that he finds to the family. Like the maple leaf – and an empty food packet. He hasn’t brought fleas again, which is good. This time he has brought a feather. It’s very pretty but it isn’t worth anything. Strength still tells him he is a good dog though. After all, it’s the thought that counts. Then, one day, the dog comes home with something huge in his mouth. He drops it at hope’s feet, and hope beams at the dog. This, they can sell. This will help everyone. “Patches, you are wonderful,” hope says. “You are a clever, clever dog.” Patches is happy too. If he was a cat, he would be purring. The dog is inside. I knew this would happen. I have seen it before – and it feels good to me. The kitchen has been re-arranged. Strength has bought a present for hope. I think it looks dirty and ugly, but hope is pleased, and strength says he will clean it up for her. But they are going to have to make their clothes last a little longer. Patches has brought something home for hope. It’s another feather. Not quite so useful for putting towards paying the bills, but never mind. The chairs and the table have been painted, and they have two more chairs as well. The joy child brings a friend home from school, and they all eat together. Patches doesn’t think much of the meal, but the friend says the salad is delicious. Hope thanks her and says that they grew the ingredients themselves. Strength did clean up hope’s present. And painted it – he is getting very good at painting things. And now hope fills the house with sweet smells as she makes jam. The dog brings home another prize worth having. Strength praises him and is glad they gave the dog a home. I’m not sure if the ugly gnome agrees. The dog still tries to chew it from time to time. That was a lovely Christmas, says strength to hope. They are sitting in the firelight at the end of the day and the children have all gone upstairs to bed. The wanted child has left his bear downstairs and hope says that she must take it up when they go to bed. A lovely Christmas, she agrees. It was the best ever, says a voice from behind them. The daybreak child has come silently in, to put her new book back on the bookshelf that strength made for everyone. I know, she says. I’ll be in bed in five minutes and asleep in ten. Hope says, make sure you are, but she isn’t angry. I’ll put his teddy in his cot, the daybreak child says, picking it up. He might wake in the night and want it. Strength likes her kindness and says so. Everyone has new clothes. I am not sure about strength’s clothes. I wonder if that was a present from the very ugly gnome. Everyone has new clothes. Even me. I have been made beautiful too.
